Every single household should have an emergency survival pack in case of natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood, tornado or fire. Your survival pack should be placed in a convenient location, in a sturdy box that is easy to carry. Your survival pack should be readily accessible in a hurry.

Do not just think that you will never need a survival pack. Disaster can strike at any time, in any place. If you love your family, have an emergency pack put aside and have an escape plan prepared and practiced. Also set up an emergency meeting point in case you get separated from your family. Practice your plan regularly, so it is ingrained into everyone’s minds.

The following is a list of the minimum required survival supplies for one person for a week. If you are a family of four, then get 4x as much as is listed below.

 

Disaster and emergency readiness kit

 

 

 

• 7 gallons of water. One gallon of water per person, per day.
• 7 days of food. 3 meals per day x 7 days = 21 meals.
• Can opener if your cans need one.
• Various juices for vitamins.
• At least 2x flashlights, plus batteries.
• First aid kit.
• Cooking pot, camp stove and fuel.
• Eating utensils.
• Matches and cigarette lighters for fire starting.
• Emergency candles for light and warmth.
• Blanket or sleeping bag.
• Spare clothing. For winter have hat and gloves as well.

These other items are recommended by FEMA:

• Dust mask for protection from contaminated air.
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
• Extra pet food and extra water for pets.
• Local maps.
• Wrench or pliers to turn off gas and water.
• Signal whistle.
• Medications and glasses if required.
• Infant formula and diapers.
• Important documents, cash, checks and change.
• Bleach for water purification.
• Feminine supplies if needed.
• Personal hygiene items.
• Paper and pencil.
• Books, games and activities.

 

 

Keep all food and water rotated out and fresh. Rotate out your batteries for the flashlights or have hand crank flashlights.
