I have thought about this but still don't have a place to do it yet. But here is a video on how to make clean drinkable water with very little. It's a slow sand/garvel/carbon filter to a distill process.

I would think, from my studies, that the second stage is not needed. Even the city water plants use simple carbon and sand filtration to treat their water.

I am considering building a more simple option. How about just using the power of the sun to distill water?

Build a solar distiller. Sun heats up water. Turns to steam. Condense it in a pipe and into a container. Purified drinking water. The UV rays would also kill any bacteria and viruses while it works, making it double safe.

But it is a good idea to learn how to build a sand and charcoal filter in case of a bug out scenario. You can make charcoal with a camp fire and dig up sand by a pond or lake.

Did you ever see my improvised survival solar distiller I did while at my Parent's cabin two years ago?

Dig a hole near a water source until you hit water or very damp sand.

Place a cup in the middle of the hole to collect fresh water.

Place a piece of transparent plastic over the hole using rocks around the edges to keep it in place. Put a small stone in the middle of the plastic to cause it to sink down, making a cone. The dip should be right over the cup.

Sun shines on the earth, heating up the water in the earth. It evaporates, collects on the plastic, condenses and drips into the cup. Fresh drinking water.
