Wow, watched the whole series.

I cannot afford all the stuff he used. I hope to get lucky with a shovel and a lot of hard work and hopefully find a very shallow source of water. Not drinkable, but hopefully for showering.

Before you start digging you could call over to your counties Water Board and ask them for the median well depths in your immediate area. They may even be able to help you right over the phone. If it's too deep in your area could save yourself alot of digging and hard work for naught.
