On the DIY site, we have an article detailing how to make LED lights.

For a 12 volt lamp, please see: http://www.thediyworld.com/How-To-Make- ... t-Bulb.php

For a household 120 volt bulb, visit http://www.thediyworld.com/The_DIY_LED_Light_Bulb.html

If you have further questions, please feel free to post them here.

I know I can use an AC adaptor but I want to create the transformer myself. Most designs seem to run off batteries but I want my lamp to plug into the wall/mains. I'm new to wiring but have done basic soldering and could handle a design using basic resistors/capacitators/whatever else I may need.

Check out these pages:

It is a collection of all our LED bulb facts and plans. You do not need a transformer at all, if you simply use enough LEDs.

I need a bit more info in order to help you though. If you are using plain, normal LEDs, then you can follow the DIY LED lamp page I listed.

Otherwise, if you are using special, high output LEDs, I can set up a circuit for you. I am working on a 1 watt LED bulb right now, using a simple voltage regulator chip to control the current. I will have the plans posted in a few days.

Please let me know your plans. How many LEDs you want to use, their current and voltage ratings. I would be happy to help.
