Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_ir ... te_battery

Have to say these battery make ideal Reserve Backup power
They hold the charge for insanely long periods
They don't suffer from Fully charged memory effect
Even Faster Recharge
Very deep cycles 12V > 9V (2.9 Volt min discharge per cell)
Does better in Wider temp ranges Form extreme hot to well below freezing

Safer than Lithium Polymer (LiPo) (think flaming Ipads and Ipods) (However LiPo are pretty safe if you follow the Lipo Rules religiously - I do own a few due I have a RC 4x4)

Suffers No Sulfation at all
(However overdraw the battery cells below 2.9v they sadly they do under go a irreversible chemical change after a week being under discharged that eventually renders them useless (If you can catch them in time you can save them but don't leave them for a week)

Due Lithium battery tech is new they are expensive

If these can be harmed so easily, I cannot see them going mainstream.

I was looking at the old Edison batteries using iron and nickel. They take abuse and last up to 80 years or more. But the commercial ones are so expensive.

These are beginning to appear in the RV, off grid, remote site and yacht world and are slowly becoming more commonplace. Whether they will go mainstream, that is likely a matter of time. Except for cost and requirement for a lithium charge controller and cell monitoring, their performance is superior to lead. I spent a long time researching LiFePO4 batteries and finally took the plunge. They will be part of a solar generator build which is progressing. I also replaced a lead acid lantern battery with the LiFePO4 equivalent, and was astounded at the performance. A little pricey though.

I would say LiFePO4 batteries are well within the grasp of anyone with basic electrical knowledge. Use a lithium friendly solar charge controller, or a programmable one. Don't exceed the max charge voltage of 3.6v per cell (always read the manual though). 3.65v might be needed to overcome wire resistance. Use a 25$ battery monitor like CellLogger8 to monitor cell balance. Also don't discharge below 2.8v (actually I'd suggest staying well above that, as there is little capacity left once the voltage knee is reached, what's the point of going to 0% for another few minutes of run time). In return for treating them right, their performance will simply blow you away. I could go on and on cause I love these lithium batteries, but I'll stop :)

Look for posts from a guy named T1 Terry on the net. He is like a LiFePO4 mad scientist or something. Just a fountain of knowledge.

I am back on the forum full time again. Sorry I was off due to paying per MB in Australia.

You can bring your suggestions back here. Thank you.
