DC generator

Post by dogder » Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:50 pm

I've watched your videos where you use your DC generator to charge your batteries when solar power is not available. Do you have any plans available to build one?? Or maybe just some advise. Looks easy enough - horizontal shaft motor (is horsepower critical??), base, alternator with brackets and a v-belt. Are you using any kind of voltage regulator??

Thanks

No I do not have plans to make one any time soon.

But yes it is that simple. A 5 HP gas engine although mine is a 3 HP and seems to handle the load well enough.

A standard car alternator and a belt to spin it.

There are many videos on YT about using a lawn mower engine and frame to spin an alternator. Just mount a pulley on the engine shaft and mount the alternator to the lawn more base. Put on a belt and off you go.

Yes you do need a voltage regulator. The alternators with a built in regulator are the best and easiest.

Jumper cables are used to attach to the battery bank. With the cables disconnected the alternator spins freely. Connect the cables and the battery bank energizes the coils and the alternator starts to put out power.

If your batteries are too low this will not work though.
