Tech man, I have 2 Odd lamps that were purchased last summer, the weird thing is with out a battery they will light the LED with out the battery, even on a cloudy day. Not sure the reason on this. but it is weird. I guess the good thing would be If you have a dark room that needs lit during the day?...

a photo resistor would be your best bet, hmm..if you still have those solar lights they should have one. Unless it is using the light from the cells to deactivate the circuit. Photo resistors are cheap

Oh this motor has a spinning perm mag that is rotating when I rotate the shaft. the coils surround the magnet..oh and loading that vid as well
