PostHeaderIcon Awesome Harbor Freight Deals And Painting The RV

I heard about the driveway alarm you can get cheap and use for my chickens. Found one at HF and took a ride out to get one. I found some nice deals while I was there. I am stepping up the RV work to get it done asap. I want to finish the RV and get on to other projects right away.

When I move into the RV I want to improve my water collection system. I want to have pressurized water from the tanks in the meadow, feeding into the RV. I also want to have the ability to take a nice, hot shower. That would be awesome. Winter will be here soon so I need to get a fireplace going for the RV. I also have an idea for an oil burning stove that burns waste veggie oil or motor oil I can get for free. Cold food storage is important before the harvest. And A solar oven and food dryer need to be made asap. Although the sun does not shine much here, it will be helpful. And there are many more projects in The Off Grid Project to be finished.

I went to Harbor Freight to get a driveway alarm to protect my chickens. Someone posted in my comments that you can find them pretty cheap. I had found only expensive ones but HF has them under $20. When I was there I also found the perfect windmill frame. It is a mole chaser that is supposed to spin in the breeze and vibrate the ground to keep moles out. I dont care about that, or its claims, but its the perfect set of windmill blades. All I have to do is add a motor and let it produce power for me. If this works, I will get a couple more of them. If you look for windmill blades on ebay, you can pay about $80 or more for them. This was on sale for only $10.

The driveway alarm I put out by the chickens to warn me if an animal approaches them at night. It is a wireless sender and receiver pair. The sensor goes out by the birds and the receiver stays inside my camper. When something approaches, a very loud alarm goes off, which would wake me up and alert me to the danger.

I got a package from my youtube friend “douglasfi2re”. He knows that the mosquitoes are very bad here and we had been talking about a bug zapper. I cannot find a cheap one around here so he sent me one. Thank you douglasfi2re again for your help out here.

I amped up the RV work to get it finished faster. The heat has slowed me down a bit and I am behind schedule. I worked on the bedroom area on the bed side. Where the wheel well is, I fixed the hole in the fender cover and then used spray foam and rigid styrofoam insulation to fill in the areas better. I have some old 2 inch thigh foam insulation laying around that fit perfectly around the wheel well. This was an uninsulated area before. After putting in the solid foam insulation, I then used spray foam to fill in the gaps perfectly and then put the water tank back in place and connect it.

Sadly while putting the water tank in place, I shorted out my new cigarette lighter socket and blew a fuse. It sticks out just a tiny bit too far and hits the water tank. I did not foresee this when I put it in there. Stupid planning on my part.

I was able to get the while bed put back together now. The foam has been sitting in the sun for a while on both sides to kill any bacteria and freshen it in the clean air. It does not smell at all. This was the clean mattress. The mattress cover will be washed and sanitized carefully and then also set out in the sun to clean it well.

The bedroom is coming along very well now. Well, half of it at least.

PostHeaderIcon Massive Ant Colony In My RV And Demolition Continues

After finding a massive ant colony in my motorhome I had left a bug bomb and closed it off for the night. What I found the next morning looked like a scene from a horror movie. Now the demolition work had to continue in order to remove all the water damage and damage caused by the carpenter ants. Its looked pretty bad.

When I first opened the RV door in the morning I was shocked to find piles of dead ants littering the floor all over the whole RV. It was a disgusting mess. It looked like some science fiction horror movie had taken place right there. There were ant tracks all over in the dust, literally covering every single space on the whole floor. The ants had walked on every single surface of the RV in the night. They died in masses everywhere.

I looked inside the ant colony under the fridge and found a larger mess of dead ants and eggs. This was a massive colony. To my shock I also found more ants still alive walking around. They had tunneled deeply into the wood flooring and some had survived the poison. I only hope the queen is dead though.

I pulled out my claw hammer and started to rip out all the mess. I also used a shovel to scoop out all the decayed wood mixed with foam. It looks just like potting soil.

I then started to rip at the rotted wood flooring and removed as much as possible in order to allow air to flow and dry the wood out better. I will have to cut out about a 2 foot by 4 foot sized section of the floor from the steps to the fridge due to rot. I also have to re-frame the fridge in.

I took a break from that and removed the board under the bed, which covers the water tank and hot water heater. I had tried to put water in the tank and turn on the water pump but water poured out onto the floor behind the bed and made a mess. I figured mice must have eaten through a water line somewhere.

What I found was another mess where mice had been running around. I will have to remove the water tank in order to clean properly under there. I also found a water hose just sitting there on the floor with an open end. I have no idea why someone would leave an open water line laying there. That is probably where my water leak came from.

I took a trip into town to pick up some packages that had arrived and get some cleaning supplies. On the way I stopped at the local Napa auto parts store to see about some batteries I had seen on the weekend. A man had dropped off some original Harley Davidson batteries that looked unused, but old. I had asked if I could have them or buy them and the guy said they had to check their quota and to come back on Tuesday. I was willing to pay for the core charge if needed. Anything to get these batteries. He told me they were originally $119 each new.

When I asked about them, he put them right into my hands with a smile and I walked out with some unused batteries for my off grid home. True, they are old, but unused. I will put them on my Bedini charger and restore them. They are AGM motorcycle batteries and should have a nice amount of energy capacity in them.

I also visited the dollar store and got a higher quality dust mask, some plastic gloves and a broom for cleaning the RV. At the hardware store I found some paint primer made for vinyl on sale for only $12.99 and grabbed it without hesitation.

Back home I opened the packages I had received.

One was from Laurie Wheeler and her daughter Logan from Youtube. It was a huge box. Baby cat was outside with me and immediately jumped on the box as soon as it hit the ground. But then a bird started to tease her and she ran off.

The box had a nice Jeep brand backpack full of goodies. I got some nice herbal teas and snacks. But the best of all was the huge gifts for Baby. She got a catnip ball, some catnip bubbles (interesting) and a very nice mouse toy on a stick that squeals realistically when the cat hits it. Plus she got some snacks and a huge bag of all natural food. This is perfect timing too because I was running low on cat food. Baby thanks you both 🙂

Laurie had wanted to start an off grid cottage but things changed and now she has a house. I have been trying to give her a kick in the butt to get some videos going. Everyone give her a shove.

Another package was from Link Knight from Youtube. Link Knight is an off gridder for about two years now and I know him from being one of the top contributors of comments on my videos. He sent me a book about making gas powered DC chargers using various AC and DC motors and alternators from cars. This is perfect because I am planning to make a gas engine powered car alternator soon for fast charging my battery bank on dark, cloudy days.

He also sent me a nice crystal radio and ear bud.

Thank you Link Knight.

Back inside the new off grid RV I cleaned up some of the mess and closed up for the night. I want to get all the demolition work done by the weekend and get started on cleaning and renovation by next week.

A look at my garden shows that the potatoes especially love the chicken manure and pine shavings compost very much. They are now about 2 feet above the level of the soil and need to be buried deeper asap. I have been told that they will bear potatoes all the way up the stems if I bury them deeper. I need to build up the raised bed frame and get more compost in there asap.

The man who gives out free compost has more but said that until it stops raining, I cannot get into the yard to get some more. And it has rained mostly non stop all year so far. So I got a couple bags of cedar mulch at the hardware store and plan to mix it with the little bit of compost I have left and a bale of hay that got water damaged. That is if the rain ever stops long enough for me to get to it.

I need to get a better rain jacket so I can keep working. No sense in sitting around waiting for the sun. Days come and go and the work has to be done.
